Boycott Bullying! Pink Shirt Day 2010 on April 14

Bullying is an insidious, chronic problem affecting everyone to varying degrees.  It happens in schools, workplaces, sporting events, socially, online...everywhere.  To hear victims of bullying talk about their experiences, sometimes years after, indicates just how debilitating this kind of behavior can be for those who have suffered at the hands of someone intent on hurting them.  I fortunately can say that I have never been the victim of a bully over a prolonged period of time.  I've had incidents but they were isolated and didn't leave a mark.  For many people though it can leave deep scars that have seen some people take their own lives because it was relentless and they couldn't see an end to it.

We seem to be the only species who obtains enjoyment from taunting, ridiculing and demeaning others for no other reason than some form of twisted gratification.  Animals hunt to survive while some people hunt to play and therein lies the problem.

Obviously the psychology behind bullying is complex and multifaceted but I guess the common factor is that the bully needs to put someone down to boost themselves up.  Bullying is my 'Achilles' heel' in terms of human behavior and I was thrilled to read a note card from April Looming of Wild Style Fashions.  April and her store are part of a group of designers who volunteered to support Pink Shirt Day 2010 that falls on April 14.  She has placed a free pink T in her store for everyone to support the day.  Below are a list of designers (with links) who have joined this worthy cause.  Apparently each designer is offering their choice of item to give away on the day so please support them to support Pink Shirt Day.

What can you do if you are a victim or witness bullying?  Well just TELL someone who you think can help.  Remaining quiet is the bullies ally.
